More specifically, her PhD investigates how queer refugees navigate coming ‘in’ and ‘out’ of ‘the closet’ in Copenhagen and Berlin respectively. The way in which queer refugees perform their sexuality and gender identity in different spaces is not only influencing their chances of being granted asylum, but also their access to and mobility within different spaces and across geopolitical and epistemic borders.
Rieke Schröder co-edited the anthology ‘Situating Displacement. Explorations of Global (Im)Mobility’ (Schröder, Soriano & Jensen, forthcoming, Peter Lang), to which she contributed with the chapter ‘In and out and in and Out of the Closet: Queer refugees and Epistemic Furniture’. She co-edited two issues of The Interdisciplinary Journal of International Studies, a student driven, Aalborg University based, peer-reviewed journal.
In the past, Rieke Schröder has received scholarships from the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung and the DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service). She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Social Work from the Osnabrück University of Applied Sciences, Germany and a Master of Science in Global Refugee Studies from Aalborg University.
