MIX is launching a new international online seminar series. The series will explore issues related to displacement, migration and integration through presentations by MIX, national and international scholars across the global north and south. In each seminar, one particular topic will be explored from different angles within an overarching theoretical or empirical framework.

Tunisia is caught between a rock and a hard place. Migratory and displacement pressures have reached high levels from both North and Sub-Saharan Africa. At the same time, the EU, constantly concerned with stopping migration, has coerced and paid Tunisia in to enforcing EU externalization policies. Consequently, thousands of migrants have ended up stuck in transition in urban areas, camps and the rural areas with few places to go. In this seminar, we explore Tunisian policies as well as the strategies migrants – women and men – employ to stay safe and move on in their lives. Steffen Jensen will briefly introduce issues around protection and human rights protection work in Tunisia. Adnen el-Ghali will discuss a group of migrants in the capital region, trying to stay safe through a host of protective and livelihood strategies. Ahlam Chemlali will take us to the south of the country where migrant women, fishermen and ordinary Tunisians try to get by in a world dominated by a criminal Libyan coast guard and the EU policies of containment.
