The point of departure is social psychological theory, which predicts that "intense" contact between migrants and natives might yield positive effects, while "superficial" contact might have opposite effects.

This project analyses the legitimacy of four different borders of inclusion and exclusion of democratic interests. The project asks how democracies might defend the exclusion of groups such as children, future citizens, and immigrants that are affected by democratic policies but excluded from democratic procedures; and how democracies might defend norms and policies that undermine the preconditions for popular sovereignty of others such as future citizens and peoples in other countries.

Projektet undersøger effekterne af integrationskrav med særligt fokus på de indvandrere, som ikke får permanent ophold eller statsborgerskab. Ved hjælp af registerdata, spørgeskemaundersøgelser og dybdegående interviews undersøges reaktioner på krav og de integrationstier fastboende ikke-statsborgere følger - hvad enten det velintegrerede indvandrer, der opfylder kravene, eller indvandrere for hvilke kravene virker uoverstigelige.

This project examines how asylum seekers experience of reception inform their socio-cultural understanding, identification, and eventual integration (or return) pathways. Analytically, the study regards the reception period as potentially formative and recognizes the reality that, for many, it continues, not only for months, but for years.
