The Faculty of Social Sciences has appointed Professor Michael Baggesen Klitgaard as the new Head of the Department of Politics and Society.

Last modified: 18.05.2020

It is an acknowledged researcher with broad scientific experience and a strong voice in the public debate who returns home to Aalborg University (AAU) on 15 August to take up a position as the new Head of the Department of Politics and Society.

Michael Baggesen Klitgaard comes from a position as professor of welfare studies and public policy at the Department of Political Science at the University of Southern Denmark. He has a PhD degree in public policy and a Master’s degree in politics and administration from AAU. Michael Baggesen Klitgaard is a recognised researcher with a CV that counts several prestigious chairpersonships and appointments as visiting lecturer and professor at universities in Denmark and abroad. He is also an active contributor to the printed media with a regular column in the Danish online media Altinget.

Leader with an eye for the reality of academia

- Michael shares the Faculty’s agenda regarding a focus on quality in research, teaching, knowledge collaboration and administration. He has a good eye for our present reality as a university. And last but not least, he has a keen ambition to establish a strong Department of Politics and Society in collaboration with the members of staff. We look forward very much to bringing this knowledge, experience and approach to task solution into play, says Rasmus Antoft, dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences

Michael Baggesen Klitgaard looks forward to returning home to Aalborg, and to the Department of Politics and Society, which in his view performs a vital function in a democratic society.

- In our work, we shed light on the national and international conditions that set the framework for our societies and for the people who live in them. We do so from many different angles, and we explore both the past and the present time - hopefully for the benefit of the future. We can and must contribute to maintaining a strong democratic society, and we must do so using critical and robust analyses.

Must dare to ask the big and difficult questions

- AAU and the Faculty of Social Sciences take pride in being relevant to society, but also in being scientifically relevant. The latter requires that we dare to ask the big and difficult questions which may not result in a tangible product tomorrow, but which it is important to answer, and which may some day turn out to provide invaluable knowledge, says  Michael Baggesen Klitgaard.

And the basis for the Department to deliver on this potential is definitely in place, he finds.

- The Department of Politics and Society is a strong construction with research environments that are already well established and a broad portfolio of study programmes. The Department has successfully accomplished the first phase of a merging process, and I look forward to exploring, together with the staff of the Department, what our position should be, what we share across the academic environments, and how we might realise the Department’s great potentials even further.

Michael Baggesen Klitgaard lives in Odense with his wife, who is a teacher and project manager. Together they have three children.

Michael Baggesen Klitgaard will take up his position as the new Head of the Department of Politics and Society on 15 August 2020.
