The Department of Politics and Society is a vibrant focal point for research and teaching activities that cover a wide span of social issues, emphasising both the past and the present. The department regularly organises different events in order to facilitate and stimulate scholarly discussions. Such events include small workshops, symposia, (PhD) seminars as well as large conferences involving both students, staff and invited scholars from around the world.

MIX International Online Seminar Series – Solidarity Practices in the City
Cities across the globe have taken a more inclusive approach to accommodating migrants and refugees than national regimes. The city can be — and is — a strategic location for an emergent and active citizenship. The city is a space in which formal notions of citizenship have been challenged and where social, economic, and political rights typically associated with formal citizenship have been substantially demanded, acquired, and enacted by non-citizen actors. This seminar investigates some of these dynamics and explanations to why. The three presentations offer both a mapping, a typology and examples of urban/municipal solidarity practices.

In the last decades, the world has witnessed major waves of displacement, spurring heated debates around responsibility-sharing and its meaning in theory and practice. To this day, however, we lack a tangible legal and normative framework as to how states and non-state actors should share responsibility and cooperate in multilateral platforms over displacement.
